Bowman has always been a place of movement, hard work and possibility.
The town began to take shape in the late 1800s around a logging railroad that connected the surrounding land, farms and businesses to new opportunities. The Branchville and Bowman Railroad helped establish the community and carried the promise that even a small rural town could become a place where people, products and ideas moved forward.
Agriculture became part of Bowman’s identity. Cotton once grew across the surrounding countryside, but over time dairy farming emerged as an important source of livelihood and pride. Bowman became widely known as the Dairy Capital of South Carolina, with local farms supplying milk to communities throughout the region.
That history matters to us.
The Gathering District was created to carry all three forward.
Why We Came to Bowman
We came to Bowman because we saw more than what was missing.
We saw a town filled with talent, history, faith, families and untapped potential. We saw people who deserved greater access to quality food, meaningful experiences and welcoming places close to home.
We also recognized that our years of experience in food, wellness, retail and community service had prepared us to help meet that need.
Bowman had been without a full grocery store since its previous market was lost to a fire. Residents were traveling outside the community for many everyday necessities. There were also too few places where neighbors could sit down, share a meal, celebrate, reconnect and simply enjoy being together.
We did not come to Bowman believing the community needed to be rescued.
We came because we believed Bowman deserved to be invested in.
Where the Story Began
Our first step was opening Modalan Kitchen & Creamery.
We wanted to create a warm and welcoming place where people could enjoy a meal, pick up a fresh juice, treat their children to ice cream and spend time with one another.
Within the first few weeks, we began witnessing something more meaningful than a successful business opening.
We saw people walk through our doors and recognize friends they had not seen in years. We watched neighbors sit together, laugh, exchange stories and rebuild connections that had been interrupted by time and the absence of a shared gathering space.
Those moments confirmed what we already felt:
Modalan gave us a glimpse of what was possible.
The Gathering District & The Gathering Place are the next chapter.
The Gathering Place
The Gathering Place is our vision for a rural grocery, meat market and community destination designed around the real needs of Bowman and the surrounding area.
It will be a place where families can purchase quality meats, produce, prepared meals, juices, natural products and everyday essentials without having to leave town.
But it will be more than a store.
We envision a place where local farmers and makers can introduce their products to new customers. A place where children can learn, play and participate in family activities. A place where residents can attend workshops, discover new skills and connect with useful services.
We envision a place where seniors feel considered, parents feel supported, entrepreneurs feel encouraged and visitors discover another reason to stop in Bowman.
Most importantly, we envision a place that belongs to the community.
Honoring the Past While Building the Future
Bowman’s earliest growth was tied to a railroad that connected the town to opportunity.
Its agricultural legacy was strengthened by farmers who worked the land, raised cattle and helped make Bowman synonymous with dairy production.
The Gathering District pays homage to that history by creating a new kind of connection.
- Where the railroad once helped move goods and people, we hope to create pathways for local products, businesses and ideas.
- Where dairy farms once helped nourish the region, we hope to improve access to nourishing food for the families who live here.
- Where generations before us built with faith, labor and determination, we hope to build with that same spirit.
This is not about forgetting what Bowman has been. It is about honoring that foundation while creating something future generations can be proud to inherit.
Our Mission
Our mission is to improve access to quality food, create welcoming community experiences and help local talent and businesses grow.
- We believe rural communities deserve beauty, convenience, opportunity and thoughtful investment.
- We believe families should be able to shop locally without sacrificing quality.
- We believe children should grow up seeing possibility in the place they call home.
- We believe seniors should be able to access essential products and services with dignity.
- We believe local entrepreneurs deserve spaces where their gifts can be discovered.
- And we believe a place to gather can become the beginning of something much larger.
An Invitation to Build With Us
The Gathering District is being built for Bowman—but it cannot be built by vision alone.
It will take residents who shop locally, farmers who share what they grow, entrepreneurs who bring forward their ideas, organizations that believe in rural communities and sponsors who understand that meaningful investment can change the direction of an entire town.
- A contribution to The Gathering District is not simply support for another business.
- It is an investment in food access.
- It is an investment in local employment.
- It is an investment in small farmers and entrepreneurs.
- It is an investment in children having more opportunities close to home.
- It is an investment in seniors, families and a community that deserves to be seen.
- It is an investment in the belief that rural towns should not be left behind.
Every shelf stocked, every meal served, every workshop hosted and every relationship formed will become part of a much greater story—the story of a community choosing to grow without losing its roots.
Our Story Is Still Being Written
We are proud of what has already begun at Modalan, but we are even more excited about what is still to come.
We see a future where Bowman is known not only for the railroad that helped establish it or the dairy farms that helped sustain it, but also for the community that came together to build something new.
